Protect

Damage to tree trunks and roots from lawn maintenance equipment weakens the tree and allows diseases to enter. A thick layer of mulch under the drip line but 2-4 inches away from the trunk protects the tree and keeps its roots cool. When doing construction around trees, avoid compacting the soil under the drip line or damaging the trunk, and use methods such as tunneling to protect your tree’s roots when installing irrigation.
